Introduction to RMST 202
Hi there, everybody. My name is Hillary, and I’m a first-year student, hoping to go into psychology, but we’ll see where the wind takes me. I’m from Vancouver, specifically Burnaby. Although I live on campus, I go home every weekend. “Back home” is only 35-50 mins, depending on the time of day, but it’s what keeps me grounded. It has everything I love, like my family and my favourite food spots. Vancouver is genuinely my favourite place to be, and I can’t imagine being anywhere else for university.
I discovered RMST 202 through a sorority sister of mine, and I was hooked on the class structure and idea. I get to choose my own grades as long as I follow through with my end of the contract. Seems like a very cool and foreign idea to me. I also really liked the idea of studying literature from the romance world. Recently, all of my readings have consisted of factual and scientific information. While the material is interesting, some variety is much needed in my life. I used to love reading when I was younger and would find myself lost in book after book, but as I grew older and more attached to my phone (which is ironic because it’s what I’m using to type this up), the love I had for reading slowly faded. Reading for pleasure has become something I haven’t been able to prioritize, so I’m both nervous and excited to return in a more intentional way.
One of my personal goals for this class is to push myself to be more confident. I find myself overthinking a lot in terms of what to say or what not to say. I worry about whether my information is even insightful or if I’m just taking up space for someone else to share their thoughts. Because of that, I often stay quiet even when I do have something to say. This blog formatting seems like a supportive way for me to work through this goal of mine, allowing me to collect all my thoughts and articulate them without the immediate pressure and fear.
Overall, I’m just very excited about this whole class. To read, grow my critical thinking skills, and further develop more confidence in myself and hear everybody else’s ideas and thoughts!
